Dual citizenship in Italy?

I was born in Italy and had dual citizenship until I turned 21. My parents were in the military and I was born in Naples. I was warned not to return to Italy by myself because I was subject to being drafted once inside the country. It happened to a young man when we were there. He visited Italy on his honeymoon and was served with draft papers before leaving. It took the US consulate to get him out of it. When I turned 21 I had to chose a citizenship. I don't think the US recognizes dual citizenship. So I am now just an american.
