Is it normal for crows to flock?

I observed a particularly spooky incident this morning: about 100 crows or so descended into the yard of a nearby house, then all faced toward the house and started walking toward it. Then they separated, some flying up to one of the two roofs and others flying closer to house itself. I've never noticed crows to flock before. Is this normal? What were they most likely fixating on?
