Our texting convos always get boring... what else can we talk about!?

We text and and after a while we just run out of things to talk about and it just seems so forced. I have heard from his friends he likes me and I really like him. What can I do to be subtly flirty? I have tried things but I just think he gets nervous. Thanks!
